FEBRUARY IS National Wild Bird Feeding Month

For the birds . . .
February is National Wild Bird Feeding Month, a great time to try one of the easy bird feeder crafts we’ve featured on this blog! Whether you’re planning on making your own bird feeder or setting up a store bought one, there are some things you should know. Put your feeder near some sort of natural cover like shrubs or trees. And hang it high enough so predators cannot get to it too easily. Be patient! Think of your bird feeder as a new restaurant: it will take awhile for the birds to find it and start frequenting it, especially in the cold. Refill the food frequently, and not always to the top. You’ll want to be sure that once birds start using the feeder, there is always something for them. But don’t fill it so much that uneaten food will get old. Consider having a water source nearby if possible, like a birdbath. Keep the area clean. Food that falls to the ground will attract other animals, like rodents.

The groundhog is certainly the animal of the day. But did you know that when this holiday began in the 18th century among the Germans in Pennsylvania, they looked not to a little groundhog, but a badger or a bear?!
